Tips for talking with someone with aphasia
Give time, listen to the message, and make room for other ways to communicate.
Give time
Use short sentences and one idea at a time. Pause and let the person respond. Speak in your normal voice.
Listen to the message
Do not finish their words unless they ask. Ask if you understood. A gesture, a drawing or a written word can help.
Make space for a conversation
Turn down the TV or other noise. Be patient. Include the person in conversations and choices.
